To start learning and build a
good communication with students or others, we need often to introduce
ourselves for the first time. In introducing ourselves, there are special
utterances that can be used to communicate with others. The utterances are as
followings:
a. Formal Greeting Responding

When we introduce
ourselves with other people, we need to convey information to give not only a
name but also other information connecting with ourselves and a situation when
introduction is in progress.

a. Slower speaking speed, don’t
rush.
b. Louder volume and project the
voice
c. Clearer utterance of the
words
d. Establish eye contact with
everyone
e. Decide and follow the setting
and the culture (stand up or sit down)

To make a conversation condition
more, there are some utterances that can be used such as:
Encouraging Conversation
Using a short response to show
that you are listening
I see Oh?
Of course Yes
Really? Mmmm
Repeating a key word or phrase
A : The meeting lasted for two
hours
B : Two hours ?
Asking a follow-up information
question
What happened?
How was it?
What did you do to them?
APPEALING TO THE SPEAKER

In a conversation or discussion,
we sometimes do not hear or understand what other people say, either the
students talk to teacher, or the teacher talks to the students. Connecting with
the thing above, we can appeal a conversation or discussion by the ways as
followings:
Appealing to the speaker
If you need the speaker to
repeat something
Pardon? Could you please repeat
that?
Execuse me? Would you mind
repeating your question?
If the speaker is talking too
quickly
I’m sorry. Could you please speak
a little more slowly?
Would you mind speaking more
slowly? I couldn’t quite follow what you said.

SPEAKING OUT IN CLASS
(Berbicara di Kelas)
To interest a teacher or another
person who is speaking, we can put our hands up. The student can also call directly the name of the teacher
(Mr./Mrs …). Sometime we can only give certain signs or eye contact to the
teacher or speaker. Below is some utterances that can be used:
Speaking out in class
Signaling you want to speak
Excuse me, ….
May I ask a question?
Could I make a comment?
Holding the floor
a. Hesitating
Well, umm .... Umm, let’s
me see
Umm, let’s see Let me think
b. Repeating or rephrasing the
question
In other word, you want to know ....
So, you’re asking me ....
c. Asking the instructor to
repeat the question if you didn’t understand

CLOSING CONVERSATION

To close learning activity
(KBM), we don’t have to stop such thing suddenly. It needs a conclusion or
summary from the lesson we have just discussed. Some utterances that can be
used as a closing are as followings:

Signaling the end
